If you are thinking of getting any work done on your teeth, like getting them straightened, you will need an orthodontic consultation.
There are many factors to consider when planning treatment with braces.
- The stage of development of the teeth
- The proportion of the jaws to each other and to the rest of the face
- The position of the teeth within the jaws
- The degree or the extent of the crowding
- The maturity and level of co-operation of the patient
In order for us to assess the nature of your problem and to plan the appropriate treatment for you, or your child, we need to :-
- Examine the mouth and study the proportions of the face
- Take photographs of the mouth and face
- Make models of the teeth
- Analyse X-rays of the teeth and the head.
Only after this examination and analysis, can we consider the methods of treatment and prepare a written treatment plan appropriate for the condition.
At our orthodontic consultation, we will discuss our treatment plan with both the patient and all decisio nmakers (e.g. in the case of children, both parents will be invited to the consultation).
The fees for the treatment we recommend will also be explained and listed at this consultation.
Only with X-rays and models to analyse, can we give you details of treatment and fees.
If a decision has been made to consider having orthodontic treatment that doesnt use invisible appliances many patients will want to know what kind of things are involved in various orthodontic procedures most people would like to know what to expect.
This first stage of orthodontics would really be an information gathering appointment, to ensure the orthodontist has enough information to be able to create a treatment plan for the patient concerned. The orthodontist will speak to the patient about their concerns, what they dislike about their teeth, and will gather as much information from the patient as possible verbally, once this has been achieved the orthodontist will usually;
- Take various photographs
- Take variousx-rays
- Take impressions of the teeth – upper and lower
- Take a number of measurements
- Make notes about any other relevant information needed
From the information gathered the orthodontist will make a detailed treatment plan for the individual patient that may take a week or more to complete which will be put in writing and sent to the patient or the patients parent/guardian.
The treatment plan will need to be signed to say it has been read, understood, and agreed to before treatment can begin, it will also detail any risks that are involved and it is likely to include information about the importance of good oral hygiene and diet throughout treatment aswell as the importance of regular attendance from the patient.
Patients will be reminded that regular attendance to their general dentist must continue for their six monthly check ups while they under go orthodontic treatment.
Once the orthodontist is happy for treatment to proceed and the patient has agreed to it, it may be necessary for a patient to visit their general dentist for extractions. When ready, orthodontic treatment will begin, either by use of a removable appliance – either simple or functional, or by using a fixed appliance.
