Root canal treatments - Emergency Dentist London

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that is designed to treat infection, or decay, that has occurred at the centre of the tooth. Root canal treatment is also known as endodontic.

Endodontic therapy involves the removal of these structures, the subsequent cleaning, shaping, and decontamination of the hollows with tiny files and irrigating solutions, and the filling of the decontaminated canals with an inert filling such as gutta percha.

After root canal treatment the tooth will be "dead".

Although root canal treatment in our dentistry is relatively painless, sometimes it remains stereotypically fearsome dental operation.

The root canal is the space that is within the root of a tooth. It is the part of what is the naturally occurring space within a tooth that consists of the pulp chamber. This is within the coronal part of the tooth, the main canal of the tooth and the more intricate anatomical branches that may connect the root canals to each other or to the surface of the root of the tooth.

The smaller branches are referred to as the accessory canals. These are more frequently found near to the root end, the apex- but may also be encountered anywhere along the root post length. There may be one or even two main canals within each root. Some teeth have more variable internal anatomy than many others. This space will be filled up with a highly vascularised and loose connective tissue which is known as the dental pulp.

The dental pulp is the tissue of which the dentin portion of the tooth is composed. The dental pulp helps complete formation of the secondary teeth (adult teeth) one to two years after eruption into the mouth. The dental pulp also nourishes and hydrates the tooth structure which makes the tooth more resilient, less brittle and less prone to fracture from chewing hard foods. Additionally, the dental pulp provides a hot and cold sensory function.

Root canal is also a colloquial term for a dental operation, endodontic therapy, wherein the pulp is cleaned out, the space disinfected and then filled.
